Art on theMART: The World’s Largest Permanent Projection System

August 8, 2018 Projects

Obscura, renowned for its large-scale architectural projection mapping on iconic buildings around the world, has partnered with property management company Vornado Realty Trust and architecture firm Valerio Dewalt Train Associates, Inc. to design and implement a permanent projection system to illuminate Chicago’s Merchandise Mart (aka theMART) building with large-scale visual artistry.

At the time of its completion in 1934, theMART was the largest building in the world. And today, as 34 Christie 4k30 Boxer projectors fire over one million lumens of artistic brilliance on the 556′ x 165′ (or 91,740 ft²) façade, Art on theMART will be the world’s largest permanent projection system.

For “Art on theMART”, Obscura is creating a software-driven platform that allows theMART team to curate an ongoing exhibition of imagery from celebrated artists, keeping the illuminations fresh, timely and engaging. Notably, the curation will focus exclusively on art, and will exclude branding, logos or advertising.

Art on theMART will be launched in a grand opening ceremony on the evening of September 29, 2018, featuring original content from Obscura’s award-winning media team and curated artists.

This one-of-a-kind project will feature 2-hour projection shows 5 nights a week, 10 months of the year for decades to come.
