In 2010, Obscura hit the road on a four-stop projection tour of California. The state landmarks transformed by digital art included San Francisco’s Legion of Honor, Old Town Sacramento’s Union Hotel, San Diego’s historic 900-foot aircraft carrier the USS Midway, and the Walt Disney Concert Hall designed by Frank Gehry in Los Angeles.
At each site, custom media intricately mapped to exterior surfaces were projected for eight to ten minutes, animating the unique characteristics of each façade. During the roadshow, the outdoor projections were also streamed live on the Web so fans could view and vote for their favorite projection.
With 18 to 20 thousand lumens of HD projection power running on as many as 10 projectors per location, two days of rigging and calibration set-up per city, and two months of media development, the end result was nothing short of magical.
